Movie Review: OBLIVION -the most unique (and possibly the lamest ) review you will ever read!

I have been blogging for quite a while now, but to be honest, this is the first time I am writing an article about a new movie. Am I confident to write a movie review? Well, I guess so.  Am I pressured? Hell yeah.

Honestly, I am not really worried that I won’t be able to deliver, ironically, I am actually more concerned of the opposite- that I will over-deliver to the verge of “spilling the beans” making my debut in movie blogging a disaster.  This may not be my bread and butter, but I promise I will try my best not to be a movie spoiler- at least with this “first.”  (grin*)

My girlfriend and I were invited to watch Tom Cruise’ latest sci-fi movie “OBLIVION” on its Philippine Premiere at the SM Mall of Asia IMAX Theater last Monday. It was indeed a great movie- action-filled, futuristic, and clean. I know that at this point I am suppose to discuss to you the synopsis as well as the general facts about the production- sorry to disappoint you but I decided to scrap that. Instead of writing an ordinary review (which will just be buried under the thousand others you can Google), I will write something about the movie, which you will never read in other blogs.

———

OBLIVION, in my opinion, will for sure be a certified blockbuster movie this year.  It has a great story, amazing cinematography, and a legendary cast. Aside from its unique plot (which I really like), the movie also has full of unexpected “twists and turns” that will literally make you feel twisted and vertiginous especially if you are seated just three rows away from the giant IMAX screen. (Lesson learned: Never sit near the screen inside an IMAX Theater. You will end up counting the pores of the characters or their nose hairs. To avoid this, come to the cinema on time or book your tickets early so you can still choose a perfect seat for you. Take note that the ideal seats are those found in the center of  7th-11th rows).

Oblivion is a movie that is capable of getting your 100% attention. It has no boring scenes and dragging part so you should really prepare your body for an hour and a half of supposedly uninterrupted and static moment- your bladder specifically. Going to the toilet whilst the movie is screening, trust me, is not an easy task. Goodluck on the swearing people and annoying b*tches whom you have to disturb just to pass through.  To be honest, the entire Oblivion experience should have been perfect if we were not directly seated in front of an insensitive douche guy who can’t shut his big mouth; who keeps on making shitty comments on every scene; who does not care about the other audience; and despite the ssssshhhh’s from his seatmates, still got the nerve to answer his fu*****g phone call, twice. (Lesson Learned: Never seat beside or near a douche. He/she will definitely ruin your movie moment). Minus the Douche, and the too-much-liquid-intake-earlier-that-day, which made me go to the loo in the middle of the movie, everything is perfect.

Okay, so before I snap just by mere remembering that stupid douche, let me proceed to the lamest movie review that you will ever read.  Here is a short backgrounder- my understanding of the story:

-OBLIVION Synopsis E style-

Sixty years from now, Planet Earth will no longer be livable as it is now. It will be severely damaged because of a war between the humans and an alien race called “Scavs”. Since the Earth is no longer a suitable place to live, people who survived the war left the planet and evacuated to a new home. According to the movie, majority of mankind moved and settled in the largest moon of Saturn, leaving just a few men whose job is to make sure that the drones and machines used to extract the remaining resources on Earth are functional. The work of these men is vital since the resources extracted on Earth are essential to the survival of the human race.   Jack (Tom Cruise) is one of those men left behind. You may be thinking that he is a solitary repair/maintenance man, who lives a boring life on Earth. You may be thinking he is unfortunate to be left behind here on Earth whilst the rest of humankind lives happily somewhere in the Universe. If that crossed your mind just now, then, you are wrong. Tom Cruise in the movie is actually a “one hell of a lucky bastard” J. He lives in a hi-tech glass house high above the clouds; he has a super fast and easily maneuverable dragonfly-like chopper/jet/spaceship; he has a collapsible dirt motorbike; and last but not the least, a super hot female co-worker who showers with him and also sleeps on his bed! Seriously, what more could you ask for, right?

As I’ve said a while ago, this movie is full of twists- four major ones (as far as I could remember).  The first twist is about the “Scavs” or the alien race who are also the projected antagonists; the second is about a girl that Tom Cruise’ always sees on his dreams; the third is about his real identity; and the Fourth is the final revelation, which you will see at end part of the movie (a bit weak coz it became a bit predictable).

If I were to ask what are the scenes in the movie that I liked most, I think the skinny dipping scene on that amazing pool (tbh, I dream of having a similar one in the future) and the contemplation moments of Jack on his secret “lake house” got me big time. I also like the dogfight between Cruise’ dragon fly chopper/jet/spaceship and the flying drones who are like giant one-eyed golf balls with high caliber machine and laser guns. If you are a science fiction movie lover like me, I am sure you will love this movie. Trust me, it is a great film although it did not make it to my personal faves- the “Transformers”, the “Matrix”, and the “Source Code” are still sitting pretty on the top of my list.

Whenever I watch a movie, I make sure to remember some parts or details that I usually tell my friends (who have not seen it yet) to watch out for.  In this movie,  you will for sure be amazed on the concept of the glass house in the clouds that will leave you dreaming it is yours.  The see-thru infinity swimming pool will make you feel envious for not having one- it is like a big crystal bowl floating in the clouds. If you are a fan of heavenly bodies like me, especially of the full moon, let this be a warning that you will not be happy of what you will see in the movie. The moon was badly damaged that actually caused the phenomena and catastrophes, which Image

destroyed the Planet. Also, watch out for the lake house, Jack’s secret haven- it will give you a refreshed feeling and a sense of relief since the movie is projecting that the Earth is severely damaged and no longer suitable to live in.  The lake house scene will in a way give you the sense of hope and optimism, which will create a perfect mix of emotions whilst digging deep into the movie.

So I guess this is what I can share for now.  Wait, before I forget, Let me give you my rating of the movie “Oblivion” in a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest). Since in general, I was entertained and hooked-in, as an avid moviegoer and real movie-lover, basing it solely on my standards, I would give it an 8.5 score.

I strongly recommend for you to find time to watch it. Take it from me, you won’t waste money on this one. Cheers!
